What’s this "Surface" thing?

Microsoft has announced an interesting new product called the Surface and it will compete directly with the iPad.    Since she heard the news, Ashleigh has been asking for one. (What are you going to do, she’s a true techy!)
It’s obvious that Microsoft has been doing their homework.  It’s a bit thicker and larger than the iPad – it can support true 16.9 widescreen for movies.  Its clip-on-cover doubles as a full-size keyboard making it more “laptop-like” when using it.  It includes a full-size USB port which means you can connect traditional accessories such as a mouse, external hard drive and more--making it very flexible indeed.  For me, a device that can easily transition from my pocketbook to the desktop would be a really cool thing!
There are two flavors – one targeted for consumers and a second targeted at corporate clients.  It’s difficult to create a “one size fits all” device; so, Microsoft is releasing two.  The latter is running full Windows 8 and it will be able to run all the same programs as the traditional desktop or laptop –cool stuff for us corporate-types.
The real question is, “Is it better than an iPad?”  Time will tell.  In the meantime, we’re looking forward to getting our hands on one.
