Cathy’s Corner – September 2017

I recently read the 2016 Bureau of Labor Statistics report that stated the average American spends 2.7 hours per day watching TV or other video content versus just 15 minutes of reading. I wondered what impact this could be having on ourselves and our society.

I’ve always enjoyed reading. To be transported to another world, another life or even just another time through the words of a book...so many adventures without ever leaving home! These days, I tend to read more non-fiction; but periodically, I pick up a book recommended by a friend or that catches my eye in the bookstore or online to be whisked away on a new adventure.

Subject:  Summer Reading

Ah, summer!  What a great time to kick back, relax and grab a favorite book.  As a kid growing up, I devoured books—reading every chance I got.  I would get lost in the stories to the point that I missed the bus at school and, on one occasion, a train from New York to Vermont (not a good thing!).  As I’ve grown up, life and other commitments have limited my reading time; and now I find that I have to “make time” to read for pleasure.

As we wrap up our zoo newsletter theme, I’ve done more reading than I usually do on our environment, the importance of zoos, biodiversity and more.  There is a short video bouncing around the Internet, particularly on Facebook (check out my feed if you want to see it), about the re-introduction of 14 wolves into Yellowstone Park and their impact on not only the wildlife but also the actual course of rivers.

Supporting Our Community

The IT Radix team is pleased to support great organizations like FAMILYConnections—a non-profit community based counseling and family service agency.  Recently, some of our IT Radix staff members attended a fundraising dinner.  Our Sr. IT Consultant, Mike Oster, shared that the highlight of the evening was hearing firsthand how FAMILYConnections is impacting lives.

Sharing Our Gratitude with Others

Recently, IT Radix proudly sponsored the Gratitude Dinner at FAMILYConnections in Essex county. The Gratitude Event included the participants and their families of FAMILYConnections’ addiction treatment programs. These programs such as Strong Mothers, Strong Fathers and Clean & Cool kids focus on those facing addiction issues.

Different Types of Connections

As humans, we crave love and connection at our core.  Technology has made it easier than ever to be “connected,” but it does not replace actual physical interaction or connection.  So, while we at IT Radix assist our clients in getting connected via technology, be it via the Internet, email, instant messaging such as Skype, webinars and more, we believe actual interaction is critical to successful relationships.

Protect Your Business from Information Theft

In my last post, I identified the need to protect your business from information theft.   In my humble opinion, most small-medium business don’t pay sufficient attention to this risk.    Here are some interesting statistics about cybercrime’s wide reach:

1 in 6 – Number of companies where employee fell for a simulated phishing email scam
$5.9 million – Median annual cost of cybercrime per U.S. company
47% – Number of U.S. small businesses that provide cybersecurity training to employees

The good news is that your security system doesn’t need to be perfect but rather, it just needs to be better than most.

Presenting: Tech Tips for the Business Owner

Thanks NJAWBO Metro East for letting me speak on "Tech Tips for the Business Owner" on Tuesday, March 3 at Toast in Montclair.

According to technology columnist, David Pogue, "today we are expected to learn to use technology via osmosis".

How's that working for you?  I had the pleasure of demonstrating some tips and tricks that will make navigating your devices faster, easier and safer.
