Is Your Office Moving?
Office relocation can be a pain in the rump. But with a little up-front planning, it can be less stressful. We hear quite often, “I didn’t know I needed to…” or “I completely forgot that.” Quite often, it’s what you don’t do that makes moving offices a disaster.
The goal in any office relocation should be minimal disruption such that your staff can work up until move out day and be working again on move in day or very quickly thereafter. Thinking about office relocation? Call IT Radix.
3 Big Mistakes to Avoid in an Office Relocation
Mistake #1 – No Detailed Plan and Checklist
This may seem like a no-brainer to many; however, not everyone has strong project management skills. A related mistake is not making a detailed enough list. See below for our special offer for a free office move checklist that probably includes some items you may have missed. We recommend you reach out to your IT Support Provider like IT Radix early in the process.
Mistake #2 – Penny Pinching by Moving Your Own Computer Network
Many businesses attempt to save money by asking their staff to disconnect, move, and reconnect their own computers, phones, and other devices. The truth is computers and phones are not just plug-and-play devices. We have seen too many frustrated companies try to reduce costs and only succeed in creating frustration and downtime. They end up with phones ringing at the wrong extension, missing cables, and damaged computers. In particular, moving your network closet is a landmine of potential problems. Be smart and work with an IT pro to plan and move your network.
Mistake #3 – Not Giving Enough Advanced Warning to Your Phone, Internet and Cable Vendors
Most office moves require eight to twelve weeks of advanced planning to get things right. Poorly planned voice, data, and electrical installations cause 80% of unexpected downtime and cost overruns on network moves. Do not assume the cabling used by the previous tenant is suitable for your phones and computer network. By planning in advance, you can avoid emergency rush fees or band-aid fixes. Do not assume the real estate broker or the contractor will know how many power outlets, phones, and network connections you’ll need or where you need them! Once the walls are up, changes and additions are typically at your expense and not cheap! The rule of thumb of one electrical outlet, one phone, and one network connection per employee is totally inadequate. Printers, scanners, fax machines, and wireless access points are often overlooked resulting in last-minute scrambling.
By avoiding these three most common mistakes, your office move can be easy and effortless.
