GoDaddy DNS down
Around 1pm this afternoon, GoDaddy started experiencing issues with their DNS service. What is DNS and why do you care? DNS or domain name service is essentially the yellow pages of the Internet. If a computer wants to know how to go to a website or send a piece of email, it needs to look up the desired “phone number” (technically an IP address) to get there. GoDaddy is the largest registrar and when their “yellow pages” are down a lot of computers don’t know where to go. How much is a lot? As my son Alex would say, a thousand million.
What does this mean for you?
- You may not be able open some websites
- You may not be able to send or retrieve email if it’s hosted with GoDaddy
- You may not be able to send email to some people, even if it’s not hosted with GoDaddy
- If you’re waiting for a response, the sender may not be able to reply
- If you have special sites such as FTP or VPN, you may not be able to access them
GoDaddy is working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. You can read more about it here.
